Centro in San Luis Potosi Mexico

Today I had a little time off because the plant that I've been working at had the power off and was closed.  It's unfortunate considering my work made sure that the plant was open on Sunday before they sent me, but it looks like the local plant had different plans than there corporate office did.  It's not the first time that happened.  They walk a different walk over here in Mexico.

So me and a guy that was down here from my customers corporate office desided to make a trip to "Centro", the down town of San Luis Potosi.  There were many different things to see here, and many of them are old.  I mean really old.

First off, here's a look at some of the market areas...

And...

This one's a little dark, I hope it looks ok on your monitors.

The other thing that was really cool about centro is the age.  San Luis Potosi is a very old city, it was founded in 1583 as a gold and silver mining comunity. Here's a little info on SLP that I though was cool...

"The city is named after Louis IX of France (also known in Mexico as San Luis Rey de Francia, Saint Louis, King of France), its patron saint. The Potosí was added in reference to the fabulously rich mines of Potosí, Bolivia, discovered some forty years before the city was founded. The city is known for its European influenced architecture. Architecturally, downtown San Luis is very similar to cities in Spain."
-From the wiki of San Luis Potosi  en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Luis_Potosí,_San_Luis_Potosí

It's last know population is 2,410,414 people as of 2005.  It's last cencus.

Anyway, what I was trying to say is it has some really old buildings...

And this beautiful cathedral.  I wish I could go in, but it looked like a service was about to start by the time I was in front of it...

Even the local homes looked old...

Every two or three blocks in centro also had a park.  These parks made it hard to beleave your in a desert area...

These are just beautiful...

With all the walking I did, I stumbled on this.  It's too bad it wasn't hooked up to anything...

Here are a few other random pics I shot as I was walking around...

There was also alot of places not so nice.  I did walk through some areas that I shouldn't have.  I was a little nervous to take the camera out, but I did get a pic of an old home that had seen better days and yes, someone still lives there...

All in all, it was a very cool experience.  I some cases, I was reminded of some of the old buildings I remember seeing in old Montreal.  But than again, I don't travel a whole hell of alot.
